Introduction to the Ultraman Card Game Demo Session
Are you ready to embark on an adventure in the thrilling universe of the Ultraman Card Game? I recently had the opportunity to participate in a demo session, and let me tell you, it was an incredible experience! If you're curious about this exciting new trading card game from Tsuburaya Productions, keep reading!
What to Expect at the Demo Session
The Ultraman Card Game demo session offers a fantastic introduction to this engaging card game. Lasting about 30 minutes, the session allows players to learn the fundamentals. Participants are paired into twos, encouraging interaction and collaboration while a presenter explains the rules at each phase of the turn.
Each participant receives two paper playmats outlining the game phases and card layout, making it easier to follow along with the gameplay. Additionally, players get 50 cards split into two decks of 25 cards each, allowing them to battle with characters such as:
- Ultraman Zero and Ultraman Tiga
- Ultraman Blazar and Ultraman Zero
These demo decks feature cards from the upcoming Starter Deck and Booster Box, primarily consisting of common and uncommon cards. This design helps new players learn without being overwhelmed.
As a bonus, participants receive one exclusive PR card at the end of the session. Since I attended both the September and October demos, I received Ultraman Zero (PR-011) in September and Bemular (PR-014) in October.
Gameplay Mechanics of the Ultraman Card Game
In the Ultraman Card Game, one player is designated as the Lead Player, and both players conduct their actions within the same phase of the turn—unlike many other card games where turns alternate.
Phases of the Game:
- Start Phase: Each player prepares for the turn.
- Draw Phase: Players draw cards from their decks.
- Lead Player Set Scene Card Phase: The Lead Player can set one scene card face-up in the Scene Area. If they do, they draw a card. A scene card can only be set if its Round is less than or equal to the Field Round count.
- Set Character Card Phase: Players take turns placing their character cards (Ultra Heroes or Kaiju) on the field.
- Level Up Phase: Players can level up a card by stacking a character card from their hand with the same name that is exactly one level higher.
- Open Phase: Players trigger their character’s enter-play effects.
- Effect Activation Phase: Players activate effects of their characters or scene cards, paying any necessary costs.
- Judgment Phase: Characters facing each other battle, and the outcome is determined by comparing their battle points (BP).
- End Phase: Players wrap up their actions and prepare for the next turn.
The gameplay is fast-paced, with winning conditions based on either achieving three or more wins in a turn or your opponent being unable to place a character card. Even if you lose a combat, you can still level up your character on the field, giving you a chance to win in the next turn. The level-up system is reminiscent of Pokémon's Evolution system or the Cardfight!! Vanguard's Ride system.
My Experience at the Demo Session
After the demo, I played a few sessions with my group and found that the Ultraman Blazar and Ultraman Zero deck had better synergy compared to the Ultraman Zero and Ultraman Tiga deck, making it the stronger option.
As this is the first time Tsuburaya Productions has released their own card game, I highly encourage everyone to give it a try. Whether you’re a seasoned TCG player or new to the hobby, the demo offers a fun and accessible way to jump into the game.
Final Thoughts on the Ultraman Card Game Demo
